Hippocampus barbouri, commonly known as Barbour’s Seahorse, is a charming and peaceful species prized in the marine aquarium hobby. Our specimens are tank-bred, ensuring healthier, more adaptable fish that are better suited to captive life.
Appearance and Size: Barbour’s Seahorses have a distinctive, elegant form with a slightly elongated snout and a range of colour variations. They typically reach up to 15 cm in length in captivity.
Temperament and Compatibility: These seahorses are gentle and slow-moving, making them compatible with other peaceful tank mates. Avoid aggressive or fast-swimming species that may outcompete them for food or cause stress.
Diet: Barbour’s Seahorses require a specialised diet consisting mainly of live or frozen small crustaceans such as mysis shrimp. Feeding should be frequent, ideally two to three times daily, to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (approximately 20 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and stable water conditions. The aquarium should be well-established with gentle water flow and moderate lighting. Provide plenty of hitching posts such as macroalgae or artificial seahorse-specific décor to allow natural anchoring behaviour.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-26°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nitrate levels. Regular water changes and careful monitoring are essential.
Origin: Tank-bred specimens, originally derived from wild populations native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Barbour’s Seahorse is a fascinating species that adds both beauty and interest to a peaceful marine aquarium setup. With proper care and attention, these tank-bred seahorses thrive and provide a rewarding experience for marine enthusiasts.
