Overview: The Narrow-Bodied Seahorse (Hippocampus angustus) is a slender, small-sized seahorse species native to Australian and Indo-Pacific waters. Known for its delicate appearance and unique swimming style, it is a fascinating addition to specialised marine aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is peaceful and slow-moving, best kept singly or in pairs to avoid stress. It is compatible with other non-aggressive tank mates but should not be housed with fast or aggressive fish that may outcompete it for food.
Diet: Hippocampus angustus requires a diet of live or frozen small crustaceans such as mysis shrimp and copepods. Feeding should be frequent, ideally two to three times daily, to meet their high metabolic needs.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (approximately 20 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and stable water conditions. The aquarium should be well-established with gentle water flow and low lighting to mimic their natural habitat. Provide plenty of hitching posts such as macroalgae or artificial seahorse perches to allow them to anchor themselves.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 22-26°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nitrate levels. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential to maintain water quality.
Additional Care: Seahorses are sensitive to water quality and stress, so consistent maintenance and a calm environment are crucial. Avoid sudden changes in water parameters and ensure feeding is consistent to prevent malnutrition.
