Synchiropus ocellatus, commonly known as the Ocellated Dragonet, is a captivating addition to mature marine aquariums. This tank-bred specimen ensures better acclimation and reduces wild collection impact.
Appearance and Size: The Ocellated Dragonet displays vivid patterns and colours, making it a visually appealing species. It typically reaches a maximum size of around 6 cm (2.4 inches).
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is peaceful and best kept singly or as a mated pair. It coexists well with other non-aggressive tank mates but may be outcompeted for food by more boisterous species.
Diet: Synchiropus ocellatus primarily feeds on small live foods such as copepods, amphipods, and other microfauna. Supplementing with high-quality frozen or prepared foods is recommended to ensure nutritional balance.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is advised to provide ample space and stable water conditions. The aquarium should be well-established with a mature live rock base to support natural prey populations.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-26°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Lighting should be moderate, replicating reef environments.
Reef Compatibility: This species is reef safe and can be kept in reef aquariums without harming corals or invertebrates.
Additional Notes: Tank-bred individuals tend to adapt better to aquarium life and have a higher survival rate. Regular observation and a varied diet will promote health and longevity.
