The Horn Shark (Heterodontus francisci) is a small to medium-sized shark native to the coastal waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean. Recognisable by its blunt head and prominent ridges above the eyes, this species is a popular choice for marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a unique and relatively manageable shark.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Horn Shark requires stable water conditions and a suitably large aquarium to thrive.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and slow-moving, but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or smaller tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on molluscs, crustaceans, and small fish. In captivity, offer a varied diet including shrimp, squid, clams, and specialised shark pellets.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 600 litres (approximately 160 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is preferred, mimicking natural daylight cycles. Provide shaded areas or caves for resting during daylight hours.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to simulate natural coastal currents.
Placement: Bottom-dwelling species; provide plenty of live rock, caves, and crevices for shelter and resting.
Origin: Eastern Pacific Ocean, particularly off the coast of California and Mexico.
Maximum Size: Up to 1.2 metres (approximately 4 feet) in length.
Due to their nocturnal nature, Horn Sharks are most active during the evening and night. They require a secure tank lid as they may attempt to jump. Compatibility with other species should be carefully considered; avoid housing with very small fish or invertebrates that may be seen as prey.
