The Horn Shark (Heterodontus francisci) is a fascinating species native to the coastal waters of the eastern Pacific. Recognisable by the prominent ridges above its eyes resembling horns, this small shark is a captivating addition to a suitably large marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Horn Sharks require stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with conspecifics. Best kept singly or in very large tanks if multiple individuals are housed.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, clams, and specialised shark pellets. Feeding should be done in the evening to match their nocturnal feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 gallons (approximately 700 litres) to provide adequate swimming space and territory.
Reef Safe: No. Horn Sharks may prey on small invertebrates and fish, making them unsuitable for reef aquariums.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Provide shaded areas or caves to mimic natural hiding spots.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to replicate coastal environments.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork, caves, and hiding places. A sandy substrate is preferred to allow natural behaviour such as resting on the bottom.
Origin: Eastern Pacific, primarily off the coast of California and Mexico.
Maximum Size: Up to 1.2 metres (4 feet) in length, though smaller specimens are commonly available for aquariums.
