Heniochus pleurotaenia, commonly referred to as the Pennant Bannerfish, is a captivating species of butterflyfish prized for its distinctive black and white vertical stripes and elongated dorsal fin. This medium-sized fish is a graceful addition to larger marine aquariums, offering both visual appeal and peaceful behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature tank environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with overly territorial or aggressive fish. Can be kept in reef aquariums with caution, as it may nip at some coral polyps.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including marine algae, high-quality frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and maintain water quality.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is recommended to promote health and activity.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium where it can swim freely and display its natural behaviour.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
Additional Notes: This species benefits from a well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. Regular water changes and stable water chemistry are essential for long-term health.
