Heniochus pleurotaenia, also known as the Longfin Bannerfish, is a visually stunning butterflyfish species prized for its elegant black and white vertical stripes and long dorsal fin filament. This large variant can reach up to 25 cm in length and is best suited to experienced marine aquarists with spacious tanks.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and social, Heniochus pleurotaenia can be kept singly or in small groups. They are compatible with a wide range of non-aggressive tank mates but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics if the aquarium is too small.
Diet: Omnivorous by nature, this species thrives on a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplementing with algae-based foods helps mimic their natural grazing habits.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space. Stable water parameters with temperatures between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity of 1.020-1.025 are essential. Moderate water flow and good filtration will help maintain optimal water quality.
Reef Compatibility: Heniochus pleurotaenia is generally considered reef safe with caution, as it may nip at coral polyps or small invertebrates. Careful observation is advised when introducing this fish to reef systems.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this species inhabits coral-rich lagoons and reef slopes.
