The Heniochus monoceros, or Masked Bannerfish, is a visually captivating butterflyfish species prized in marine aquariums for its elegant appearance and unique behaviour. This medium-sized fish features a striking black and white pattern with a characteristic elongated dorsal fin that resembles a banner, adding dynamic movement to your tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped fish. Best kept singly or as a mated pair.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to allow ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at small invertebrates or coral polyps, so monitor behaviour closely.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic their natural habitat.
Placement: Mid to upper water column, where it can swim freely and display its natural behaviour.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches).
Providing a well-established tank with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots will help reduce stress and encourage natural foraging behaviour. Regular water changes and stable water chemistry are essential for maintaining health.
