The Goby and Shrimp symbiotic pair is a captivating addition to any marine aquarium, showcasing one of nature’s most remarkable partnerships. These pairs typically consist of a burrow-dwelling goby and a pistol shrimp, which work together for mutual benefit. The shrimp maintains the burrow, providing shelter for both, while the goby acts as a vigilant lookout against predators.
Care and Compatibility: These pairs are generally peaceful and reef safe, making them suitable for community reef tanks. They thrive best in established aquariums with plenty of live rock and sandy substrate to facilitate burrow construction. It is recommended to keep them in tanks of at least 75 litres (20 gallons) to provide sufficient space for natural behaviours.
Feeding: Both gobies and shrimp are carnivorous and will accept a variety of meaty foods such as frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised pellet or flake foods designed for carnivorous invertebrates and fish. Feeding should be done once or twice daily to maintain optimal health.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity between 1.023 and 1.025 SG, and pH of 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic their natural habitat without disturbing their burrows.
Placement: Place the pair in a quiet area of the tank with ample sandy substrate and rockwork to encourage burrow building. Avoid aggressive tank mates that may harass or prey on them.
These symbiotic pairs are a fascinating display of marine ecology and provide both visual interest and natural behaviour to your reef aquarium.
