Gnathanodon speciosus, commonly called the Golden Trevally, is a striking member of the Carangidae family, renowned for its bold yellow body with distinctive black vertical stripes. This extra large specimen is a captivating addition to any suitably sized marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its size and active nature, this species is best suited for experienced aquarists.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but active and boisterous. It can coexist with other large, robust fish but may outcompete smaller or more timid species. Avoid housing with very small or slow-moving fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and specialised marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 600 litres (approximately 160 gallons) is recommended to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and adult size.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate to strong water flow mimics natural reef currents and supports the fish’s activity levels.
Placement: Provide ample open swimming space with some rockwork or artificial structures for shelter. Ensure the tank is securely covered as this species is known to be a strong jumper.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 90 cm (35 inches) in captivity.
This species is not typically reef safe due to its predatory nature and size, so it is best kept in fish-only or species-specific setups.
