The Diodon liturosus, or Porcupine Pufferfish, is a captivating species prized for its distinctive ability to inflate its body and erect sharp spines as a defence mechanism. This medium-sized pufferfish is a fascinating addition to a marine aquarium but requires a well-maintained environment and experienced care.

Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species is best suited for aquarists familiar with marine fish care and the specific needs of pufferfish.

Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial and may nip at smaller or slow-moving tankmates. It is advisable to keep them with robust, non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with small invertebrates or delicate fish as they may be seen as prey.

Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including hard-shelled foods such as molluscs, crustaceans, and specialised pufferfish pellets to help wear down their continuously growing teeth. Supplement with frozen or live foods like shrimp and crab.

Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour. Provide plenty of hiding spots using live rock and caves.

Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.

Reef Safety: With Caution. While not typically reef safe due to their diet and tendency to nip, they may be kept in fish-only or mixed non-reef setups.

Additional Notes: The Porcupine Pufferfish inflates when stressed, so handle with care during maintenance. Regular monitoring of water quality and diet is essential to prevent health issues.
