Diadema setosum, commonly known as the long-spined sea urchin, is a popular invertebrate for marine aquariums due to its striking appearance and algae-grazing capabilities. This medium-sized specimen features long, slender black spines with characteristic white bands near the base, making it a visually captivating addition to reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate. Diadema setosum requires stable water parameters and careful handling due to its delicate spines.
Feeding: Primarily herbivorous, this urchin grazes on algae and biofilm. Supplement its diet with dried seaweed (nori) or specialised herbivore pellets to ensure nutritional balance.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Generally reef safe, Diadema setosum coexists well with most reef inhabitants. However, caution is advised around slow-moving or delicate invertebrates as the spines can cause damage if disturbed.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide ample space for movement and grazing. Moderate water flow is ideal to mimic natural conditions without stressing the urchin.
Placement: Position the urchin on live rock or substrate where algae growth is present. Avoid placing near corals that may be sensitive to physical contact.
Additional Notes: Handle with care to avoid injury from sharp spines. Ensure stable water quality with regular maintenance to support health and longevity.
