Diadema savignyi is a large species of sea urchin prized in the marine aquarium hobby for its elegant, long spines and effective algae grazing capabilities. Native to Indo-Pacific reefs, this invertebrate plays a valuable role in maintaining tank cleanliness by consuming nuisance algae.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Feeding: Primarily herbivorous, Diadema savignyi grazes on algae naturally present in the aquarium. Supplementary feeding with dried seaweed (nori) or specialised herbivore pellets is recommended to ensure adequate nutrition.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Generally reef safe, Diadema savignyi coexists peacefully with corals and most invertebrates. However, care should be taken to avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may harm its delicate spines.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is advised to provide sufficient space for movement and grazing. Moderate water flow and stable water quality are essential for health.
Placement: Position the urchin on live rock or reef substrate where algae growth is available. Avoid placing near delicate corals that could be damaged by its spines.
With proper care, Diadema savignyi can be a striking and functional addition to a mature marine aquarium, enhancing both aesthetics and ecological balance.
