Ctenochaetus cyanocheilus, commonly referred to as the Chevron Tang, is a striking tang species native to the Indo-Pacific region. Recognisable by its distinctive chevron-like markings and vibrant blue hues, this tang is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts.
As an algae grazer, the Chevron Tang plays an important role in controlling nuisance algae in reef and fish-only aquariums. It is generally peaceful but can show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar tang species, so careful consideration of tank mates is advised.
Care and Husbandry
- Temperament: Generally peaceful but territorial with other tangs.
- Diet: Primarily herbivorous; requires a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods.
- Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and grazing surfaces.
- Water Parameters: Stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4.
- Compatibility: Compatible with a wide range of peaceful reef fish; avoid housing with aggressive tangs or similarly shaped species to reduce territorial disputes.
Additional Notes
Regular feeding of algae-based foods is essential to maintain health and vibrant colouration. Providing live rock and ample grazing surfaces will encourage natural foraging behaviour. This species is reef safe with caution, as it may nip at some sessile invertebrates or soft corals.
