The Cryptocentrus cinctus, commonly known as the Yellow Watchman Goby, forms a remarkable symbiotic relationship with snapping shrimp from the genus Alpheus. This pair is a popular choice for marine reef aquariums due to their fascinating behaviour and mutual benefits.
The goby provides vigilance against predators, while the shrimp maintains and defends their shared burrow. Together, they create a natural and dynamic display in your tank.
Care and Husbandry
- Feeding: Both species are carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. The goby will also accept high-quality pellet or flake foods.
- Compatibility: Peaceful and reef safe, this pair coexists well with other non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with large predatory fish that may threaten the shrimp or goby.
- Reef Safety: Yes. Both species are considered reef safe and will not harm corals or sessile invertebrates.
- Tank Requirements: Provide a sandy substrate with live rock to facilitate burrow construction. A minimum tank size of 60 litres is recommended to ensure adequate space and stable water parameters.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Placement
Place the pair in a quiet area of the tank with ample sand bed and rockwork to encourage natural burrowing behaviour. Avoid high flow areas that may disturb the shrimp.
Additional Notes
Pairs are supplied in various sizes to suit different aquarium setups. Observe the pair closely after introduction to ensure compatibility and successful burrow establishment.
