The Coradion altivelis, commonly known as the Longfin Butterflyfish, is a captivating addition to any marine aquarium. This medium-sized species is admired for its distinctive elongated fins and striking black-and-white patterning, making it a standout specimen.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. In captivity, it accepts a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, marine algae, and specialised prepared foods formulated for butterflyfish.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While not known to nip at corals, individual behaviour may vary. Monitor closely if housed in reef setups.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
This species thrives in aquariums with live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Regular water changes and high water quality are essential for long-term health.
