Chilomycterus schoepfii, commonly referred to as the Spiny Burrfish, is a fascinating medium-sized pufferfish species prized for its distinctive spiny body and intriguing behaviour. Native to the western Atlantic, this species is a captivating addition to a marine aquarium, but requires careful attention to its care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species is best suited to aquarists with some experience in keeping marine puffers due to its specialised diet and temperament.
Temperament and Compatibility: Chilomycterus schoepfii is generally semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially towards other puffers or slow-moving fish. It is advisable to house this species either singly or with robust tankmates that can tolerate its behaviour. Avoid keeping with very small or delicate fish.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and requires a diet rich in hard-shelled foods such as molluscs, crustaceans, and snails to help wear down its continuously growing teeth. Frozen or live foods such as krill, shrimp, and shellfish are recommended. Regular feeding of hard-shelled prey items is essential to maintain dental health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended for a medium specimen to provide adequate swimming space and territory. The aquarium should be well-established with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places. Good water quality and stable parameters are essential.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural conditions without stressing the fish.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While Chilomycterus schoepfii may coexist in some reef setups, it has the potential to nip at invertebrates or corals, so caution is advised when considering reef compatibility.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean.
Maximum Size: Approximately 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
