Chelmon rostratus, or the Copperband Butterflyfish, is a striking addition to mature marine aquariums. This small butterflyfish is renowned for its vibrant yellow and white vertical stripes and elongated snout, which it uses to forage for food in crevices.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards similar species.
Diet: Omnivorous. In the aquarium, provide a varied diet including live or frozen brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and specialised prepared foods. Supplement with algae and small invertebrates to mimic natural grazing.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at certain sessile invertebrates such as tube worms or small polyps.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable.
Placement: Provide ample live rock with crevices for natural foraging behaviour and hiding spots.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
Due to their specialised diet and sensitivity, Chelmon rostratus is best suited for experienced marine aquarists who can maintain stable water quality and provide a varied diet. Regular observation is recommended to ensure health and acclimatisation.
