Chelmon muelleri, commonly known as the Blackfin Coralfish, is a medium-sized butterflyfish prized for its elegant appearance and unique black fin markings. This species is best suited for experienced marine aquarium keepers due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. Chelmon muelleri requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be shy. It coexists well with other non-aggressive fish species.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with high-quality frozen and prepared foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 US gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, Chelmon muelleri may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or coral polyps, so careful monitoring is advised.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting to replicate natural reef conditions.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement is preferred to mimic their natural habitat.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots to reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
Maintaining pristine water quality with regular monitoring of parameters such as nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia is essential for the health of Chelmon muelleri. Quarantine new specimens to prevent disease introduction. This species benefits from a well-established tank with mature live rock to support its grazing behaviour.
