Chaetodon xanthocephalus, commonly known as the Yellowhead Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its bright yellow head and contrasting body patterns. This small variant is suitable for marine aquarium enthusiasts with some experience due to its specific care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature tank environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a community tank with other non-aggressive fish.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised preparations for butterflyfish. Supplement with live or frozen coral polyps and small invertebrates if possible.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is advised to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
