Chaetodon xanthocephalus, commonly known as the Yellowhead Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This large butterflyfish features a bright yellow head contrasted with a patterned body, making it a standout addition to mature reef or fish-only marine tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably large tank. Compatible with other non-aggressive fish but caution is advised with small invertebrates, as butterflyfish may nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with marine algae or coral polyps if available.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef conditions is recommended to promote health and activity.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress and territorial disputes.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
With proper care and a stable environment, the Yellowhead Butterflyfish can be a stunning and rewarding addition to your marine aquarium.
