Overview: The Chaetodon trifasciatus, commonly known as the Three-Striped Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its bold triple band markings and elegant swimming behaviour. This large butterflyfish is best suited for experienced hobbyists due to its specialised care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium setup.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a spacious tank. Compatible with other non-aggressive fish but caution is advised when housing with small invertebrates, as butterflyfish may nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets. Supplement with marine algae and sponge-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to promote health and natural behaviour.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Ensure open swimming areas and avoid overcrowding to reduce stress.
Origin: Native to the Western Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea and East African coast.
Maximum Size: Up to 18 cm (7 inches) in length.
Additional Notes: Butterflyfish are known to be sensitive to water quality fluctuations. Regular water changes and stable parameters are essential. Not recommended for beginner aquarists or tanks with delicate coral species due to potential nipping.
