Overview: The Semeion Butterflyfish (Chaetodon semeion) is a visually captivating species prized for its intricate patterning and graceful swimming. This small butterflyfish reaches a maximum size of approximately 15 cm and is best suited to well-established marine aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but territorial, the Semeion Butterflyfish can be kept singly or as a mated pair. It is best housed with other non-aggressive species. Avoid keeping with highly aggressive or fin-nipping fish. This species is reef safe with caution, as it may nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates.
Diet: This species requires a varied diet including specialised prepared foods such as frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine flakes or pellets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplementation with live or frozen coral polyps and sponges may be necessary to meet nutritional needs.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour. The aquarium should be mature with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. Stable water parameters and excellent water quality are essential.
Care Level: Due to its specialised diet and sensitivity to water quality, the Semeion Butterflyfish is recommended for advanced aquarists with experience in marine fish husbandry.
