Rainford’s Butterflyfish (Chaetodon rainfordi) is a captivating species prized for its bold markings and vibrant colours. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this medium-sized butterflyfish reaches up to 15 cm in length and is best suited to mature reef aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or fin-nipping species.
Diet: Omnivorous, with a preference for a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae and sponge-based foods to mimic natural grazing behaviour.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should be well-established with plenty of live rock to support natural grazing and hiding spots.
Water Conditions: Maintain stable marine parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.023-1.025 SG. Moderate water flow is ideal to simulate natural reef conditions.
Lighting: Standard reef lighting is sufficient; no special lighting requirements.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, where it can swim freely and graze on live rock surfaces.
Due to its specialised diet and sensitivity, Rainford’s Butterflyfish is recommended for experienced marine aquarists committed to providing optimal care.
