Chaetodon rafflesii, commonly known as the Blackback Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its distinctive colouration and pattern. This large butterflyfish reaches a considerable size and is best suited for experienced marine aquarium keepers.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks. Compatible with other non-aggressive fish but avoid housing with overly aggressive species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates; not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure the aquarium is mature with stable water parameters.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
