The Fourspot Butterflyfish (Chaetodon quadrimaculatus) is a visually captivating species native to the Indo-Pacific region. Recognisable by its bright yellow body and four distinctive black spots, this large butterflyfish adds vibrant colour and dynamic movement to mature reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species is best suited for experienced hobbyists due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Compatible with other non-aggressive fish but caution is advised when housing with delicate invertebrates, as butterflyfish may nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (40 US gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and maintain stable water parameters.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure the tank is well-established with stable water conditions.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
With proper care, the Fourspot Butterflyfish can be a stunning and rewarding addition to a mature marine aquarium.
