Chaetodon guttatissimus, commonly known as the Spotted Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its unique spotted pattern and graceful swimming behaviour. This large butterflyfish is best suited for advanced marine aquarists due to its specific dietary and environmental needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably sized aquarium. Compatible with other non-aggressive fish but caution is advised when housing with delicate invertebrates.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with marine algae and sponges to mimic natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG. Moderate water flow is ideal to simulate natural reef environments.
Lighting and Placement: Standard reef aquarium lighting is sufficient. Position the fish in mid to upper levels of the tank where it can swim freely and access feeding areas.
Reef Safety: With caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates; not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches).
