Chaetodon fasciatus, commonly known as the Banded Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its bold vertical stripes and elegant swimming behaviour. This medium-sized butterflyfish is best suited for experienced aquarists due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Suitable tank mates include other peaceful fish that do not compete aggressively for food.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and territory.
Reef Safety: With caution. This species may nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates, so it is best kept in fish-only or well-established reef tanks with robust corals.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable, replicating natural reef conditions.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, where it can swim freely and access feeding areas.
Origin: Native to the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
