Cantherhines pullus, commonly referred to as the Orange-spotted Filefish, is a distinctive marine species prized for its subtle colours and interesting behaviour. This filefish is suitable for experienced hobbyists due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Temperament and Compatibility: Cantherhines pullus is generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or fin-nipping species to reduce stress. It is best kept singly or in a mated pair in larger aquariums.
Diet: This species requires a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplementing with algae-based foods and specialised filefish preparations is recommended to ensure nutritional balance.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres is advised to provide adequate swimming space and stable water parameters. The aquarium should have plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places to mimic their natural environment.
Water Conditions: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and high water quality are essential for the health of this species.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While Cantherhines pullus may be kept in reef aquariums, they can occasionally nip at sessile invertebrates or corals, so monitoring is advised.
Available in various sizes, this filefish makes a fascinating and elegant addition to a well-maintained marine aquarium.
