The Clown Triggerfish (Balistoides conspicillum) is one of the most visually captivating triggerfish species available for marine aquariums. Recognisable by its distinctive black body adorned with large white spots and vibrant yellow markings, this fish adds a dramatic focal point to any large marine setup.
Care Level: This species is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its size and temperament. It requires a minimum tank size of 250 litres to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and territorial nature.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Clown Triggerfish is known for being semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as it matures. It is generally incompatible with smaller, more timid fish and invertebrates, which it may harass or prey upon. Careful selection of tank mates is essential, favouring robust, similarly sized species.
Diet: This carnivorous fish thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as crustaceans, molluscs, and high-quality frozen or prepared marine fish foods. Supplementing with live or frozen shrimp and squid will help maintain optimal health and vibrant coloration.
Tank Requirements: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and territory establishment. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters typical of reef aquariums are recommended. Lighting requirements are standard for marine fish and should support the overall reef environment.
Reef Safety: Not reef safe. The Clown Triggerfish will prey on small invertebrates and can damage corals.
Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, this species can reach a maximum size of approximately 50 cm in captivity. Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial to support its health and longevity.
