The Balistes punctatus, commonly known as the Spotted Triggerfish, is a large and visually impressive species prized by experienced marine aquarium enthusiasts. Recognisable by its distinctive spotted pattern and strong body, this triggerfish adds dynamic movement and character to a suitably sized marine tank.
Care Level: This species is best suited for advanced hobbyists due to its size and temperament. It requires a minimum tank size of 250 litres to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Temperament and Compatibility: Balistes punctatus is known for being territorial and can be aggressive, especially towards smaller or more passive tankmates. It is advisable to house this triggerfish with robust, similarly sized species and avoid keeping it with small, delicate fish or invertebrates. Compatibility with reef invertebrates is generally poor, so it is not considered reef safe.
Diet: This triggerfish is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as crustaceans, molluscs, and prepared marine fish foods. Regular feeding of high-quality frozen or fresh seafood will help maintain optimal health and vibrant coloration.
Tank Setup: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing, as well as open swimming areas. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters typical of marine environments are essential. Lighting requirements are standard for marine fish and should support the overall aquarium ecosystem.
Origin and Size: Native to tropical marine waters, Balistes punctatus can reach a maximum size of approximately 40 cm in captivity.
