The Aulostomus maculatus, or Trumpetfish, is a striking and slender marine fish prized for its unique appearance and stealthy hunting technique. This medium-sized specimen can reach up to 60 cm in length in the wild, though aquarium specimens tend to be smaller. It is best suited for large, well-established marine aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: Trumpetfish are generally peaceful but predatory, feeding primarily on smaller fish. They can coexist with larger, non-aggressive species but are not suitable for tanks with small, delicate fish or invertebrates. Compatibility with other species should be carefully considered to avoid predation.
Diet: In captivity, Aulostomus maculatus requires a diet rich in meaty foods such as live or frozen small fish, crustaceans, and other marine protein sources. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: Due to their size and active hunting behaviour, a minimum tank size of 500 litres is recommended. The aquarium should have ample swimming space with rockwork or coral structures to provide hiding spots and ambush points. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters are essential for their wellbeing.
Care Level: This species is considered moderately difficult to care for and is recommended for experienced marine aquarists familiar with predatory fish care.
