The Arothron hispidus, or Large Pufferfish, is a visually captivating species known for its distinctive pattern and robust body. This fish is best suited for advanced marine aquarium keepers due to its size and specific care requirements.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially with other puffers or slow-moving tank mates. It is advisable to keep this species with similarly sized or larger fish to avoid stress or aggression.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Arothron hispidus thrives on a varied diet including molluscs, crustaceans, and prepared meaty foods. Regular feeding of hard-shelled foods helps maintain beak health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its large adult size, a minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality. Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential.
Reef Safety: With Caution. This species may nip at invertebrates and corals, so careful consideration is needed when housing in reef aquariums.
Additional Care: Provide plenty of hiding places and a secure lid as puffers are known jumpers. Monitor water parameters closely to ensure optimal health.
