The Arothron hispidus, or Starry Puffer, is a striking species prized for its unique spotted appearance and engaging behaviour. This extra large specimen is suitable for advanced marine aquarium enthusiasts who can provide ample space and specialised care.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially with other puffers or slow-moving fish. Best kept with robust tank mates that can tolerate its inquisitive nature. Avoid housing with small, delicate species that may be harassed.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for hard-shelled invertebrates such as molluscs and crustaceans, supplemented with meaty foods and algae. Regular feeding of varied diet helps maintain beak health and overall vitality.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and activity level, a minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended. Provide plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas. Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality.
Reef Safety: With Caution – may nip at corals and invertebrates, so not recommended for sensitive reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced, requiring knowledge of pufferfish behaviour and dietary needs.
