Aeoliscus strigatus, also known as the Razorfish or Shrimpfish, is a distinctive pipefish species prized for its unusual vertical swimming posture and delicate appearance. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this species is a captivating addition to mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Aeoliscus strigatus requires stable water conditions and a peaceful environment to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and shy, this species does best in a calm community tank with non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid housing with large or boisterous fish that may outcompete or stress them.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of live or frozen small crustaceans such as copepods, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Frequent, small feedings are recommended to meet their nutritional needs.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is advised to provide adequate swimming space and stable water parameters.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle water flow are preferred to mimic their natural habitat and reduce stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock or artificial structures for shelter and grazing. Aeoliscus strigatus often orient vertically among seagrass or coral branches, so aquascaping to replicate this environment is beneficial.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
Due to their specialised care requirements and sensitivity, Aeoliscus strigatus is recommended for experienced marine aquarists committed to maintaining optimal water quality and diet.
