The Acanthurus triostegus, commonly referred to as the Convict Tang, is a visually striking surgeonfish distinguished by its bold black vertical stripes on a pale body. This extra large variant is suitable for experienced marine aquarists who can provide ample swimming space and proper care.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped tangs. Best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding spots and swimming room. Compatible with a wide range of community marine fish but avoid housing with overly aggressive species.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, the Convict Tang thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its active nature and size, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended. Provide strong water flow and stable water parameters typical of reef environments. Lighting should be moderate to support algal growth for grazing.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, this species may nip at certain corals or sessile invertebrates, especially if underfed or stressed.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including coral reefs around the Indian Ocean and Pacific islands.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
