The Acanthurus coeruleus, commonly known as the Blue Tang, is a visually stunning tang species prized for its vibrant blue colouring and graceful swimming behaviour. This medium-sized tang is a popular choice among marine aquarists seeking a peaceful yet active addition to their saltwater tanks.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for aquarists with some marine experience.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar-shaped tangs.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality herbivore flakes or pellets. Occasional meaty foods can be offered but should not dominate the diet.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 US gallons) to allow ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, the Blue Tang may nip at some sessile invertebrates or coral polyps, especially if underfed.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate to strong water flow are recommended to mimic natural conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate their active nature.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential to maintain health. Avoid housing with aggressive tank mates to prevent stress. The Blue Tang is a beautiful and rewarding species for those prepared to meet its care requirements.
