Acanthurus blochii, commonly called Bloch’s Surgeonfish, is a beautifully patterned tang prized for its unique appearance and active swimming behaviour. This species is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its specific care requirements.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but territorial towards conspecifics and similar tang species. It is recommended to keep only one Acanthurus blochii per tank or introduce multiple tangs simultaneously in a sufficiently large aquarium to reduce aggression. Compatible with a variety of peaceful community fish but avoid housing with overly aggressive species.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, requiring a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Lighting should mimic natural reef conditions but is not critical for this species.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, Acanthurus blochii may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or corals, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
