The Acanthurus achilles, commonly known as the Achilles Tang, is a visually stunning species prized for its deep black body contrasted with bright orange markings and a distinctive white spot near the tail. This XXL specimen is a mature individual, making it a striking focal point in any large marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Achilles Tangs require stable water conditions and ample swimming space.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. They can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish, so careful consideration is needed when selecting tank mates.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Feed a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality herbivore pellets and occasional meaty foods.
Minimum Tank Size: 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) or larger to accommodate their active swimming and territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at corals or sessile invertebrates, so monitor behaviour closely.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate to strong water flow to mimic their natural reef environment.
Placement: Provide plenty of open swimming space with live rock for grazing and hiding spots to reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 23 cm (9 inches) in length.
Due to their size and temperament, the Achilles Tang is best suited for experienced hobbyists with large, well-established marine tanks. Regular monitoring and a balanced diet will ensure a healthy, vibrant fish that adds dynamic movement and colour to your aquarium.
