The Acanthostracion quadricornis, or Longhorn Cowfish, is a fascinating marine fish prized for its unusual box-like shape and prominent horn-like extensions on its head. This small variant is suitable for marine aquarists with intermediate to advanced experience due to its specialised care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be shy and slow-moving. It is best kept with non-aggressive tank mates to avoid stress or injury. Avoid housing with very small fish or invertebrates that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on a variety of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with algae-based foods to ensure a balanced diet.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality. The Longhorn Cowfish produces toxins when stressed or threatened, so stable water parameters and a low-stress environment are essential.
Water Conditions: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and moderate water flow. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution – This species may nip at corals or invertebrates and can release toxins harmful to reef inhabitants if stressed.
