Meiacanthus mossambicus, commonly known as the Mozambique Fangblenny, is a fascinating and peaceful species prized for its unique appearance and hardy nature. This tank-bred variant ensures healthier specimens acclimatised to aquarium life, making them an excellent choice for both novice and experienced marine aquarists.
These blennies are known for their distinctive venomous fangs, which they use defensively in the wild, but they pose no threat to other tank inhabitants when kept in a well-maintained aquarium. Their temperament is generally peaceful, and they coexist well with other non-aggressive species.
Care and Husbandry: Meiacanthus mossambicus thrives in a minimum tank size of 75 litres (approximately 20 gallons), providing ample space for swimming and territory establishment. They prefer stable water parameters with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, and a pH between 8.1 and 8.4.
Diet should be varied and carnivorous, including high-quality frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, supplemented with quality marine pellets or flakes. Feeding multiple times a day in small amounts is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Placement within the aquarium should include plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing, as these blennies enjoy exploring crevices and caves. Moderate water flow and lighting are suitable, reflecting their natural reef-edge habitat.
Being reef-safe, Meiacanthus mossambicus can be kept in reef aquariums without risk to corals or invertebrates, making them a versatile addition to diverse marine setups.
