The Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus) is a popular choice among advanced marine aquarists due to its distinctive appearance and fascinating nocturnal behaviour. This small-sized shark features slender, streamlined body with characteristic white tips on its dorsal and tail fins, making it a striking addition to large reef aquariums.
Care Level: This species is best suited for experienced keepers due to its specific husbandry needs and large space requirements.
Temperament: Generally peaceful compared to other shark species, the Whitetip Reef Shark is a nocturnal predator that spends much of the day resting in caves or under ledges. It can coexist with other robust fish species but may prey on smaller, slow-moving tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, it requires a diet rich in meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, fish fillets, and specialised shark pellets. Feeding should be done in the evening to mimic natural feeding times.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its active swimming behaviour and potential adult size, a minimum tank volume of 600 litres (approximately 160 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may disturb smaller invertebrates and fish, so careful selection of tank mates is essential.
Lighting & Water Flow: Moderate lighting and moderate water flow are ideal to replicate its natural reef environment.
