The Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus) is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a unique and active predator. Recognisable by its slender body and distinctive white tips on the dorsal and caudal fins, this species is primarily nocturnal and prefers to rest in caves or under ledges during the day.
Care Level: This shark is best suited for advanced hobbyists due to its specific husbandry needs and large tank requirements.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 500 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space. The aquarium should include plenty of rockwork to create caves and hiding places, mimicking its natural reef habitat. Good water quality and stable parameters are essential.
Diet: Whitetip Reef Sharks are carnivorous and thrive on a varied diet including fresh or frozen seafood such as shrimp, squid, fish, and crustaceans. Feeding should be done in the evening to align with their natural nocturnal feeding behaviour.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful compared to other shark species, they can be kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Avoid housing with very small or timid species as they may be seen as prey.
Reef Safety: With caution. While primarily piscivorous, they may disturb invertebrates or smaller reef inhabitants.
Providing a well-oxygenated environment with moderate water flow and stable temperature between 24-27°C will help maintain optimal health.
