The Queen Angelfish (Holacanthus ciliaris) is one of the most visually captivating marine fish available for the aquarium hobby. Recognisable by its brilliant blue and yellow colouring and distinctive crown-like spot on its forehead, this species adds a vibrant focal point to any large marine aquarium.
Care Level: This species is best suited to advanced aquarists due to its size and specific care needs. It requires a minimum tank size of 250 gallons (approximately 950 litres) to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive, the Queen Angelfish can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish or similar-shaped species. It is advisable to keep them singly or as a mated pair in large tanks to reduce aggression.
Diet: An omnivorous feeder, the Queen Angelfish thrives on a varied diet including marine algae, sponges, mysis shrimp, and high-quality frozen or prepared foods. Supplementing with marine-based vitamins and occasional live foods supports optimal health and vibrant coloration.
Reef Safety: With caution. While not strictly reef safe, they may nip at sessile invertebrates such as sponges and corals. Suitable for fish-only or fish-plus-some-invertebrates systems where careful monitoring is possible.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential to support their health.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places. Open swimming areas are also important to accommodate their active nature.
Origin: Native to the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum Size: Up to 45 cm (18 inches) in captivity.
