Atelomycterus marmoratus, commonly referred to as the Large Spotted Catshark, is a striking shark species prized by experienced marine aquarists. Recognisable by its marbled pattern of dark spots and blotches, this species adds a unique presence to a well-maintained marine tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a suitably large aquarium to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may prey on smaller fish and invertebrates. Best housed with larger, non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid keeping with very small or slow-moving species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and specialised shark pellets. Feeding should be done 2-3 times per week to maintain optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Provide moderate water flow to mimic natural conditions without causing excessive stress.
Placement: Bottom-dwelling species that prefers sandy or fine gravel substrate with plenty of hiding places such as caves or rockwork.
Origin: Native to the Indo-West Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 60 cm (24 inches) in length.
Due to their specialised care requirements and size, Atelomycterus marmoratus is recommended for experienced marine aquarists with large, well-established tanks. Regular monitoring of water quality and diet is essential to maintain health and longevity.
