The Small Giant Moray Eel (Gymnothorax javanicus) is one of the largest and most visually impressive moray eels available to marine aquarists. Recognisable by its distinctive mottled pattern and robust body, this species is a captivating addition to a suitably sized marine aquarium.
Care Level: This species is best suited for experienced hobbyists due to its size and specific care requirements. It demands a large tank with plenty of hiding places and secure lids to prevent escape.
Temperament and Compatibility: Gymnothorax javanicus can be territorial and predatory, especially towards smaller fish and invertebrates. It is recommended to keep this eel with larger, robust tank mates that are not small enough to be considered prey. Avoid housing with small or timid species.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, the Giant Moray Eel thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as fish, squid, shrimp, and other marine protein sources. Feeding should be done 2-3 times per week, ensuring food is offered in the evening or at night when the eel is most active.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended for a small specimen, with larger adults requiring significantly more space. Provide ample rockwork and crevices to mimic natural hiding spots. Secure tank lids are essential as moray eels are known escape artists.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient, replicating natural reef conditions. Water flow should be moderate to strong to maintain excellent water quality and oxygenation.
Origin and Size: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Gymnothorax javanicus can grow to over 2 metres in the wild, though captive specimens are typically smaller. This listing is for a small-sized individual.
