Acropora austera is a spectacular large SPS coral prized for its intricate branching formations and vibrant hues, making it a standout addition to mature reef aquariums. Originating from tropical Indo-Pacific reefs, this species thrives under stable, high-quality marine conditions.
Lighting Requirements: This coral demands strong, high-intensity lighting such as metal halide, T5, or high-output LED systems to support its photosynthetic zooxanthellae. Aim for PAR levels between 250-400 µmol/m²/s.
Water Flow: Moderate to strong, turbulent water movement is essential to ensure optimal gas exchange and nutrient delivery while preventing sediment accumulation on the coral surface.
Placement: Position Acropora austera higher in the tank to maximise light exposure, ensuring adequate space from neighbouring corals to avoid aggressive interactions. This coral benefits from stable water parameters and should be placed where water flow is dynamic but not directly blasting.
Care Level: Advanced. This species requires consistent water quality with parameters such as temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.025-1.026, calcium 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals that may cause tissue damage.
Regular monitoring and maintenance of water chemistry, combined with stable environmental conditions, will promote healthy growth and vibrant coloration.
