Cephalopholis cruentatus, commonly known as the Coral Grouper, is a visually impressive marine fish prized for its vibrant red and white spotted pattern. This large species is best suited for experienced hobbyists due to its predatory nature and specific husbandry needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: This grouper is a solitary and territorial predator. It is generally incompatible with smaller fish and invertebrates, which it may view as prey. Suitable tank mates include other large, robust species that can coexist without risk of predation. Avoid housing with small or peaceful fish.
Diet: Cephalopholis cruentatus is carnivorous and thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, fish fillets, and specialised carnivore pellets. Feeding should be regular but controlled to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its potential adult size and territorial behaviour, a minimum tank size of 500 litres is recommended. The aquarium should provide ample hiding places and rockwork to establish territories and reduce stress.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and good water quality with moderate to strong water flow. Lighting requirements are standard for marine fish and do not require specialised lighting.
Reef Compatibility: Cephalopholis cruentatus is Not Reef Safe due to its predatory nature and tendency to consume smaller reef inhabitants.
