Cephalopholis cruentatus, commonly referred to as the Coral Hind, is a medium-sized grouper species admired for its vibrant colouration and distinctive spotted pattern. This marine fish is a captivating addition to larger reef or fish-only aquariums, offering both visual appeal and interesting behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a suitably sized aquarium to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Coral Hind is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially towards smaller fish and conspecifics. It is best housed with similarly sized or larger tank mates. Avoid keeping with very small or timid species to prevent stress or predation.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and specialised frozen marine fish foods. Regular feeding 3-4 times per week is recommended to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is advised to provide adequate swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow replicates natural conditions and supports fish health.
Placement: Provide ample rockwork and hiding places to mimic natural reef crevices. This helps reduce stress and territorial aggression.
Origin: Native to the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 40 cm (16 inches) in captivity.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not strictly reef safe, it may be kept in fish-only or fish-dominant mixed aquariums. Avoid housing with small invertebrates or delicate reef species.
