Overview: The Dwarf Seahorse (Hippocampus zosterae) is one of the smallest seahorse species, prized for its charming appearance and fascinating behaviour. This species is best suited for dedicated marine aquarists with experience in seahorse husbandry.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to their specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and slow-moving, Dwarf Seahorses are compatible with other gentle species. Avoid aggressive or fast-swimming tankmates that may outcompete them for food.
Diet: Primarily carnivorous, feeding on live or frozen copepods, mysis shrimp, and specialised seahorse pellets. Frequent small feedings throughout the day are ideal to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 30 litres (approximately 8 gallons) is recommended for a small group, with ample vertical space for hitching posts such as macroalgae or artificial seahorse perches.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Water flow should be gentle to moderate, avoiding strong currents that can stress the seahorses.
Placement: Provide plenty of hitching points like branching macroalgae or coral skeletons to allow natural anchoring behaviour.
Origin: Native to the coastal waters of the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum Size: Typically reaches up to 5 cm (2 inches) in length.
Additional Notes: Regular water changes and stable water parameters are crucial. Seahorses are sensitive to poor water quality and require a well-established aquarium with mature biological filtration.
